Some students are finding it hard to lose Phil Renteria after he’s helped them gain so much progress to gain their education. One student explains her connection with the exiting Director of Student Life.
I am a homeless student living in my car since 2008 and I know without a doubt that Mr. Renteria has played an integral part in my retention, progress, and growth. He has been there to listen to me when I wanted to give up and encouraged me to fight on.
Phil walked me to the staff on campus in charge of resources. He did not tell me where to go. He walked me there. I would not have gone alone out of embarrassment but with him by my side, I had courage.
When I needed to provide the homeless shelter with a phone number in order to get on the waiting list, he helped me with that. When I won for Student Overcoming Adversity he tracked me down on foot to let me know and asked me to be present, he walked me to the stage.
He helped me become a Phi Theta Kappa member, always encouraging me and acknowledging my hard work. He introduced me to many people who were willing to help me get out of my car. When I am feeling alone, worried, and hopeless, I can reassure myself that Mr. Renteria will lend me his ear and give me a smile no matter what his day is like.
He never hesitates to say "hello" and give me a smile no matter who he is with or where on campus he is. He always has the time to let me know he cares. Truly, it would be such a loss to the students and staff of this school if Mr. Renteria were to be let go.
Many times I am on campus until 9 p.m. and later and see Mr. Renteria leaving the campus to go home. He is dedicated and I have never heard or seen him look like he wasn't happy to be here.
He is a role model and a leader to all, but mostly to those of us who are struggling to stay in school. Please let us and the community know that SJCC rewards the hard workers, the loyal and student-dedicated staff who has walked us through difficult and challenging times. I pray you keep Mr. Renteria on staff as those who truly care about students and not just a paycheck are few and far between. I am willing to pay more for classes if it would keep Mr. Renteria on staff.
